MAGIC Minutes for June 18 2025
by Secretary Wendy Shimada, MAGIC*
At 4:04 p.m. President Mike Turnbull called the meeting to order with 19 attendees present within a few moments. Mike thanked everyone for coming and apologized for the glitch in sending out the meeting invitation.
He reviewed that last month's presentation was on SIM cards and iPhone safety with Ron. Today's presentation covers Apple Subscriptions, followed by Q & As. Directly after the meeting, the board will hold a brief meeting to discuss the remaining educational presentations for the year, so he encouraged members to provide input. Mike then reported that Treasurer Carol Heimgartner was not present but had provided the monthly Treasurer's report showing a $40 donation, a Zoom bill of $173.97 and Whidbey Telecom bill of $30, leaving a healthy balance of $4,426.28.
At 4:07 p..m. Ron then proceeded with a very informative presentation on Apple Subscriptions/Services (storage, music, etc.), followed by a Q & A session.
Attendees posed several questions, primarily on music, so it was determined that a session specifically on managing your music will be included later this year. The meeting was adjourned at 4:56 p.m. The next meeting will be July 16, 2025 at 4 p.m. on Zoom.

Apple is launching 15+ new products this fall, here's what's coming
by Ryan Christoffell, 9to5mac
We're past the halfway mark of 2025, and Apple still has a lot of big plans for the year. In addition to major software updates like iOS 26, there are 15+ new Apple products in the pipeline that are expected to launch before the year ends. Here's everything that's coming.
It took a minute, but Apple has at last activated its official Threads account. And thanks to its massive Instagram presence, it instantly picked up nearly 5 million followers.
Today's move comes well after several Apple-related accounts joined Instagram's alternative to X right out of the gate. Apple Music, Apple News, Apple Books, Shazam, and Beats by Dre were among the first to show up shortly after Threads launched in mid-2023, but the main @apple account remained absent until now.
I
Instant 4.8 million following
Despite having yet to post anything, Apple's Threads debut already carries quite a bit of weight. The @apple account had over 4.8 million followers the moment it went live, thanks to Threads' auto-follow feature for Instagram accounts. Given @apple's massive Instagram presence, currently at over 34 million followers, the immediate boost isn't surprising.
What makes the move notable is obviously the broader context. Apple has long maintained a strong presence on X, to the point of facing criticism in recent years.
Over there, it has nearly 10 million followers and continues to use the platform to promote events, ads, and product launches. The company has been quiet on alternative platforms like Mastodon, where only Phil Schiller, Apple Fellow and longtime marketing chief, maintains a personal presence.
9to5Mac's take
Apple's arrival on Threads may not signal a full-on platform shift just yet, but it does show the company is at least willing to play in the broader social network field. Whether that translates into actual posts, or even full-on marketing campaigns, remains to be seen.
Wizard Sez: You can get the Treads application from the Apple Store. It is free but requires you to become a member.
M5 MacBook Air: Release date
M4 MacBook Air: Specs
M5 MacBook Air: Design and features
M5 MacBook Air: Price
Apple's M4 MacBook Air was released in March 2024, about a year after the M3 version was released. Apple appears to be on a yearly cycle with the MacBook Air, and the next generation could be released next spring. This article will keep track of what's being reported, as well as offer a perspective based on Apple's current lineup.
M5 MacBook Air: Release date
Expected in the first half of 2026
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported in March 2025 that Apple is working on the M5 MacBook Air, but did not mention when it would be ready. But we can guess based on the availability of the M5 series of chips. A recent report stated that the M5 iPad Pro and M5 MacBook Pro could ship in the second half of 2025, which means the Air would ship three to six months later.
If the M5 iPad Pro and MacBook Pro are released in October or November of this year, then we'll probably see the M5 MacBook Air in the first half of 2026.
AppleInsider reported on July 3 that Apple will "likely" release the M5 MacBook Air in early 2026. The code names for the new laptops are J813 (13-inch Air) and J815 (15-inch Air).
Apple Unveils Liquid Glass: How This New Design Language Will Redefine Your Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch Experience
by OWC Wayne G., macsales
Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 keynote today was packed with announcements, but the link that ties all the announcements together is a new software design language named "Liquid Glass."
Apple says this represents the company's "broadest software design update ever." As such, this isn't just a fresh coat of paint; it's a fundamental rethinking of how users interact with their Apple devices.
The stated aim is to make apps and system experiences "more expressive and delightful while being instantly familiar." But what does this sophisticated new aesthetic truly mean for the everyday experience on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches? Let's dive into the shimmering depths of Liquid Glass.
Control which apps can access your data, location, camera, and microphone, and manage safety protections.
Apps ask for permission the first time they want to use something on your Mac, explaining how they use the information. You can later change how much you want to share, increasing or decreasing your overall level of privacy.
The Maps app asking for permission to use your current location.
Time Machine is an Apple Application that comes with the computer. It is a way to backup the computers internal hard drive to keep all your data safe in case of a problem with hard drive. It keeps all the data that is sent to it so that if a file gets deleted or lost it can be found and restored from the old data on the backup drive.
Data is not deleted from the backup drive. So as long as a file was created after the Time machine was first set up you will always be able to go back and restore it, even if it had been deleted.
In order be able to keep all the data from the past, present and future, the back up disk needs to be large enough to hold it all.
Set up a Storage device
Make sure your internal Drive is showing on the desktop. If it is not the go to the Finder settings and turn on the Drives to display:
First task is to determine how big the internal drive is. You can either look at the icon for the disk on your desktop and see how big it is:
or if you do not plan to use a lot of disk space that you might click on [command]-i to figure out how mush space you will use on this hard drive during the life of the computer:
Now you need to obtain a backup drive that has three (or more) times the capacity you expect to have on the internal hard drive. purchase a device the will plug into you USB or lightning port.
When you first plug in the new backup drive, open the Disk Utility (it is in the Utility Folder that is in the Application Folder) and use it to select the new disk, click on the erase button and then select the "APFS" Format, the "GUID Partition Map" option, and give it a good name. The select "Erase".
Click on the disk on the desktop and give it a good name.
Now it can be setup as the Time Machine Backup:
Go to the System Settings and select Time Machine
Select the new disk to be the new Time Machine
Select the Backup Frequency (We recommend every hour)
Backup
If you selected the "Automatically Every Hour" or Day, or Week, option for the Backup Frequency then you need do nothing except be sure that the drive is connected.
If you selected the "Manual" option then you win need to use the Time Machine option in the menu bar and select "Backup Now". You can also use this option at any time no mater which Backup Frequency you selected.
Note that the first time you backup on a new backup drive it will take a while. After that it will only take a few minutes and it will happen in the background so you may not even notice it.
Also note that if you get this menu at any time, it will tell you when you last backed up.
Restore
Restore a file
When you need to recover a file that has been deleted, damaged, or messed up, an older version can be retrieved from Time Machine:
Click on the folder that contained the file that you have lost or damaged
Click on the Time Machine in the Menu bar (the one that looks like a clock) And select the "Browse Time Machine Backups" option.
In the Time Machine window, either select a date on the right side, or use the arrow to scroll back in time until you see the file you wish to restore
Click on the file to restore
Click on restore
And the file has been restored to its rightful place. Note that if a more recent or bad version of the file is in the folder, you will be asked if you want to replace the existing file or keep both the existing file and the new file. If you choose to keep both, the one you are bringing from Time Machine will be renamed by adding the number "1" to the name so that you know which one is which. This is useful if you want to use something that you deleted yesterday and now decide you want to use it even after modifying the current version.
Full restore
When you have purchased a new computer or just repaired a computer and need to get the Time Machine data onto the computer, it is best done with Migration Assistant which can be found in the Utilities Folder that is inside the Applications Folder.
You will need to supply a password when you start Migration Assistant. Then you will see choices on whay you can load onto the new or repaired computer, the first choice is from the Time Machine disk (assuming that it is plugged in).
The current data (not old data that is on the Time Machine disk but was deleted at some point in the past) will be loaded and so the internal drive will be identical to the previous internal drive.
There's an old adage that suggests the best place to start a story is at the beginning. And, for the low-vision individual immediately taking an iPhone out of the box, your best option is to engage the iOS artificial intelligence called "Siri" to get you started.
Siri is a personal assistant bot who will perform several tasks for you, but the first task you can command Siri to do is initiate Voice Over which is Apple's screen reader.
Voice Over provides auditory descriptions of the buttons and options on your phone, making the early stages of navigation easier.
Voice Over is also compatible (and customizable) with braille.
Accessibility Settings Menu
Asking Siri to open the phone's settings menu provides many more options for low-vision users to experience and utilize their phone's most integral features.
For example:
You can change the color filters and enhance contrast to support your vision needs. One of the more popular features is called Dark Mode, which places essential content at center screen and fades out distracting toolbars and menus.
You can make font adjustments that boost text readability by making the script larger and clearer.
You can adjust how your settings and apps are arranged to reduce clutter.
You can turn on audio descriptions when watching a video or a movie to hear details about the scene.
Vibration Options in Haptic Feedback
Another commonly utilized option for just about every Apple user, regardless of their sight ability, are the haptic notifications. These are pulsing or tapping sensations triggered by specific programs or functions of the device.
A user can determine the strength or type of vibration and align it with a digital task or action, creating an associated relationship. For example, whenever a text is received, the device can pulse an assigned number of times, or whenever a message has been left in voice mail, a single tap is prompted. In this way, the sense of touch becomes highly informative.
Haptic feedback is also used to provide Taptic Time which uses taps or pulses to inform an individual of what time it is. This is also a very popular feature of the Apple Watch since that device is already pressed against someone's wrist, and many people don't want to be forced to hold a phone to receive a notice or a countdown.
Additional Options and Strategies
Apple offers several apps which can make it easier for low-vision or blind users to get the most from their phones.
Magnifier uses the camera and the flashlight to turn the screen into a digital magnifying glass, increasing the size of anything you point it at, such as a document or a menu.
Speak Screen and Speech Controller will read practically any digital text you pull up on your screen at your preferred pace.
Reduce Motion slows down the panning, transitioning, and other movement effects on the screen to alleviate vertigo and reduce the distractions of screen dynamism.
Tap Tap See is an app that uses your phone camera to audibly identify photos or objects around you.
Be My Eyes assists low-vision users by linking them to volunteers or company representatives. The software accesses live streaming, so another person can provide details about whatever your camera is revealing.
Additional apps and features testify to the evolution of technology for low-vision users, and Apple designers appear to have made this a priority. Their products can certainly enhance a visually impaired person's experience with using a phone or digital device.

Can You Use New AirPods Pro 2 on Older iPhone or iPad?
from oszdaily
If you've recently acquired some new AirPods or AirPods Pro, you might be in a situation where you're wondering if the latest models of AirPods work with an older iPhone or iPad. This is a very important question, since many people will be in a situation where they themselves either buy new AirPods or gift them, but yourself or the recipient has an older model iPhone or iPad.
For example, let's say the latest fancy new AirPods Pro 2 with Hearing Aid Functionality are gifted to someone that has an older iPhone that is stuck on iOS 16, and an older iPad that also can't be updated beyond iOS 16, so will the AirPods still work? The answer is yes, sort of, and it's somewhat complicated, as we'll explain.
Can You Use New AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 2 with Hearing Aid features on old iPhone or iPad? With iOS 16?
Here's What You Need to Know
AirPods Pro 2 have a lot of incredible advanced features, including FDA approved Hearing Aid functionality.
But it turns out that the iPhone or iPad the AirPods Pro are setup with must be able to use iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or newer in order to access the hearing aid features, including the entire hearing test and setup.
In a situation like this, the AirPods Pro 2 will still connect to the older iPhone or iPad, but the hearing aid features will not work or be available.
Standard AirPods 4 will be less hobbled by linking with an older device, as they do not have the hearing aid functionality to begin with.
Your iPhone Compass Is More Useful Than You Think — Here's How to Take Full Advantage of It
by Jovana Naumovski, gadgethacks
With so many useful native and third-party apps available on iPhone, the Compass app often goes unnoticed. It may not be as essential as Messages, Photos, or Mail, but you can still get plenty of use out of it, especially if you're a hiker, camper, or someone who enjoys outdoor adventures.
One of the best features of the Compass app is that it works offline, relying on your device's GPS and magnetometer rather than cellular service. This means it's just as effective in remote areas as it is in urban settings. While navigating, you can also turn on Airplane Mode or Low Power Mode to conserve battery power. For added security, download offline maps in Apple Maps before heading out.
Here's a breakdown of all the features in the Compass app, a simple yet powerful tool with everything you need on a single screen. (We're showing it off on iOS 18, but it will work similarly on older iOS versions.)
iPadOS 26 Brings Mac Functionality to the iPad Experience (Finally!)
by Leanne Hays, iphonelife
What to Know
Apple announced the new iPad operating system, iPadOS 26, on June 9, during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference keynote address.
iPadOS 26 shares a "Liquid Glass" redesign with the other new Apple device operating systems.
New features focus on multitasking and making the iPad more closely resemble a MacBook in functionality than ever before.
iPad users have wished for a more Mac-like interface for years, but Tim Cook has insisted for just as long that Apple wasn't planning to create a "converged Mac and iPad." We haven't reached a unified Mac and iPad operating system, but iPadOS 26 is certainly a giant step in that direction. In addition, the iPad gets a massive visual redesign.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 release date: When to expect the new model
by Ryan Chritoffel, 9to5mac
It's been almost two years since a brand new Apple Watch Ultra model launched, but that drought is almost over. Apple Watch Ultra 3's release date is fast approaching, here's when to expect the new model.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 expected to launch in September
Last year, Apple did not launch a new Ultra model. Instead, it just released a new satin black titanium finish for the Ultra 2.
But reporting from various sources indicates this is the year for a brand new model.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 is expected to launch this September.
Based on well-established patterns, we can get even more precise with the timing.
Apple usually kicks off the fall with a big iPhone and Apple Watch-focused event.
The most likely date for that event is right around Monday, September 8.
Pre-orders for the Apple Watch Ultra 3 will likely begin that week, with the release date being the following Friday, September 19.
Apple's plans could always change, but it has followed a pretty consistent pattern with previous Apple Watch launches. As a result, an Apple Watch Ultra 3 release date in mid-September is highly likely.
New features of the Apple Watch Ultra 3
Apple Watch Ultra 3 is rumored to include a handful of new features. Apple will likely have several more surprises in store too.
First, the Ultra 3 is expected to gain display and chip upgrades that it missed out on last year.
When the Apple Watch Series 10 arrived last fall, it included a new LTPO3 OLED display. This enabled more frequent refreshes in always-on mode, plus improved viewing from angles.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 should gain the same technology this year.
Similarly, the Series 10 debuted a new S10 chip, while the Ultra 2 still has the S9. Expect the Ultra 3 to either get Apple's S10 or a brand new S11—perhaps with AI optimizations for watchOS 26.
Outside of playing catch-up to the Series 10, there are three other brand new features rumored for the Ultra 3:
High blood pressure detection
Satellite connectivity for Messages
5G cellular
New health sensors and connectivity features should make the Apple Watch Ultra 3 a better option than ever for adventurers and explorers.
New Apple TV 4K could be launching at the best possible moment
by Ryan Christoffel, 9to5mac
Believe it or not, the first Apple TV product preceded even the iPhone with its initial introduction. Yet for almost two decades, the product has remained fairly niche in Apple's lineup. But the new Apple TV 4K launching this fall could be the best chance yet to change that.
New Apple TV 4K might be the first to go mainstream
In the early days of the Apple TV, the product was referred to by Apple as a "hobby."
It wasn't expected to achieve the kind of success found by the Mac or iPod, or subsequently the iPhone.
Instead, it was just a fun side project in an area Apple cared about.
When the Apple TV HD launched in 2015, Apple sought to make the product more of a hit. For a while, its biggest barrier to mass adoption seemed to be price.
These days, the Apple TV 4K is more affordable than ever at $129—which can be split into multiple payments in many cases.
But when all TVs include access to streaming apps at no extra cost, the Apple TV 4K is still a tough sell.
WatchOS 26 will alert you if your Apple Watch battery is draining faster than normal
by Benjamin Mayo, 9to5mac
With watchOS 26, Apple is upgrading the battery monitoring features on the Apple Watch. The system will observe your average usage patterns, and notify you if your watch battery is draining faster than normal.
This alert gives you a quick shortcut to enable Apple Watch's Low Power Mode to maximise battery life until you can next get to a charger.
As the system compares your current battery usage to your historical average patterns, it means an alert for any abnormalities may help you avoid getting caught short in a pinch.
In the example screenshot above, the watch prompted me that my remaining battery life had already dropped to 50% at 7 PM. This is about 25% lower than where I would expect it to be on typical day that includes no workouts (hence, no active heart rate tracking.)
In this case, the cause of the battery drain is the fact I was running the beta. This is completely expected as system efficiency and performance can vary dramatically during the cycle of developer seeds, which often means battery life takes a hit.
But imagine I was running public version of watchOS 26. The lower than normal battery alert may trigger in cases where I have been using the watch more than average. This could include activities that are dependent on the cellular radios or GPS (especially in areas of weak signal strength), or perhaps I have simply used the watch more than I typically do.
In these cases, the alert gives me a chance to top up the battery at my convenience, rather than being surprised when the low battery alert fires when the battery is almost empty.
Similar functionality has also been rolled out to the iPhone as part of iOS 26.
iOS 26 and watchOS 26 will arrive as a free software update to customers later this year. The updates are currently in closed developer beta. A public beta will launch sometime in July.
8 hidden watchOS 26 features that are better than Liquid Glass
by Alex blake, macworld
Apple's watchOS 26 update is full of great new features, but some of the best have flown under the radar. Here are eight top features you may have missed.
If you watched Apple's WWDC keynote in June, you probably remember the headline features in watchOS 26, such as the AI-powered Workout Buddy and Liquid Glass redesign. But you might not have realized that there's actually far more to this software update than these showy new additions.
In fact, watchOS 26 is packed with a slew interesting updates, from clever widgets to new ways to enjoy your favorite photos. Here, we've picked out eight of our favorite little-known tweaks that you'll want to rush to try in watchOS 26.

High-tech Mac malware hides itself in fake Zoom update
by Roman Loyola, macworld
SentinelLabs has posted a report about a new malware that targets Mac users of blockchain technologies, such as crypto. The threat agents behind the attack are based in North Korea, according to research by Huntabil.IT, as cited by SentinelLabs.
The attack involves executable scripts written in AppleScript, C++, and Nim. Targeted users are sent a meeting invitation via Calendly, a cloud-based B2B scheduling service. The contact is made over Telegram as the attacker impersonates a trusted contact of the target. The invitation includes what appears as a link for a "Zoom SDK update script" but is actually a link to download and install the malware.
Once installed, the malware collects "general system data," browser data, and Telegram chat histories. It collects user data such as the login information of the Mac, the version of macOS being used, and passwords in macOS's Keychain. SentinelLabs also reports that it targets data from Arc, Brave, Firefox, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Edge; Safari was not listed.
How to protect yourself from malware
Given the nature of the attack reported by SentinelLabs-Mac users of blockchain technologies who employ Calendly and Telegram-it seems as though most Mac users are not targets. However, the report points out that the use of Nim-based software in conjunction with AppleScript is a relatively new development. This combination helps the malware avoid detection and could be eventually used in a wider attack.
The easiest way to protect yourself as an individual user from malware is to avoid downloading software from repositories such as GitHub and other download sites. Apple has vetted software in the Mac App Store, and is the safest way to get apps. If you prefer not to patronize the Mac App Store, then buy software directly from the developer and their website. If you insist on using cracked software, you will always risk malware exposure.
Never open links in emails or texts you receive from unknown and unexpected sources. If you get a message that looks like it is from an entity that you do business with, check the sender's email address and inspect the URL carefully. If you see a link or button, you can Control-click it, select Copy Link, and then paste it into a text editor to see the actual URL and check it.
Surprisingly plausible scam message impersonates UPS to extract recipients' personal information.
iPhone owners beware: a new and surprisingly plausible phishing scam is making the rounds, and could easily catch out the unwary.
The message, which has been seen by AppleInsider reporters, claims to be from the delivery company UPS. It says a package is ready to be delivered, and encourages the recipient to click on a link to set this up. Of course, the link goes to a fake website where personal data can be harvested.
"We attempted to deliver your UPS package on [date]," the message reads, "but were unable to contact you and the delivery could not be completed. Your package needs to be signed for in person, so please reschedule the delivery by doing the following." And then you get the link.
iOS's security measures, created for precisely these kinds of situations, mean links in messages from unknown senders aren't clickable. But scammers quickly adapted to this, and now use two methods to get round it: they instruct you to either copy and paste the URL into a browser (usually citing nebulous "security reasons") or reply to the message with "Y" (to "activate the link") and then reopen it. Replying to a message tells iOS that the other person is a known sender, and links will therefore become clickable.
This particular scam is particularly dangerous for a number of reasons. First, it's unusually well crafted. I can't spot any typos or grammatical oddities, the fake URL is less obvious than such things tend to be, and the idea of a "we couldn't deliver your parcel" message is entirely plausible. Second, it has a potentially very wide target audience, because at any one time lots and lots of people are waiting for packages and many of them won't know which delivery company has charge of it. (Even those who aren't waiting for a package may think a housemate or family member ordered something.)
Finally, the scam has the advantage of urgency, because people really care about their packages and will be alarmed by the message's claim that failing to reschedule the delivery will result in it being sent back to the sender. With Prime Day coming up next week, it's particularly timely as well, assuming that most people will be waiting for something to arrive in the mail.
Here are some tips if you do respond to a scam email. Call your bank. Put a stop payment on your charge card if it is involved. Change your account password for whatever accounts are involved. If it's a PayPal account, log into that account and change the password. If you use a bank account online change that password. You can also set up email "rules" to block email from the sender if their email address shows. If you use Apples Mail app you'll find the "Rules" options in the Mail app Settings. You should also change the password to your email account that the scam email came to.

Apple's WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) took place June 9th, 2025, with news of coming features and operating systems for this fall. All device operating systems monikers will jump to 26. That is MacOS Tahoe 26, iPadOS 26, iPhone iOS 26, tvOS 26 and WatchOS 26.
And the display on iPhone and iPad will be updated to what they call Liquid Glass for a new dynamic look. It will also offer colored folders and better connectivity between devices. The Spotlight Search app will also be able to pull up the clipboard history. (When you select text or an image and copy it, it goes to the "clipboard" until you paste it where you want.) And the updated Preview app will make PDF editing much easier.
iPadOS 26 will be able to resize windows and can tile app windows much like you can on your Mac.
With iOS 26 your phone will be able to do live translations. That's going to be pretty amazing. There will also be a new Games app and the Apple Watch will get a notes app.
Looking forward to all the Apple hardware and software updates, I'll keep you informed throughout the months.
