MAGIC Minutes for July 16 2025
by Secretary Wendy Shimada, MAGIC*
At 4:05 p.m. Vice President Ron Sharp welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order with 22 attendees present within a few moments. Members were reminded to mute their microphones during the meeting, unless they were asking a question or addressing the group. Ron noted that President Mike Turnbull would be logging in a little later on in the meeting. He noted that last month's presentation was on Apple Subscriptions and an additional presentation on the Music App specifically would be given later on this year. Today's presentation is on the current Apple Hardware products available.
The next meeting will be August 20 at 4 p.m. on Zoom. Robert will be giving a tour of MAGIC's website.
Carol Heimgartner gave the Treasurer's report, showing a balance of $4,426.28 after the monthly Whidbey Telecom bill was deducted.
There was a temporary technical glitch before getting started on the presentation so Robert Elphick fielded a couple of quick questions before the presentation began.
In his Keynote presentation, Ron covered all of the current Apple computers, iPads, iWatches, Monitors, AirPods, iPhones, etc available, with a quick price and screen size comparison. The presentation will be available, afterwards, as always, on the MAGIC website.
After the presentation, Ron and Robert answered a few members' questions, and the meeting was adjourned at 4:57 p.m.
MAGIC Musings
Greetings MAGIC members.
by Mike Turnbull, President
This month's meeting presentation will be all about navigating the MAGIC website presented by Robert.
Last month, Ron and I started using a shared Numbers email list spreadsheet, and it worked great except my MacBook's version hid nine addresses. Therefore, nine folks did not get an invite. Sorry to those affected. Proving that us users often need "MAGIC," since computers don't work like magic.
The moral being "every month we improve on our Apple devices, until for some reason unknown, we don't." I hope to see you on the Zoom August 20th.
Note: This Software Update section of the newsletter lists the most relevant Apple updates. Not all updates are listed for all products. Additionally, I'll add other pertinent updates on occasion.
iOS 18.6 now available for iPhone, here's what's new
by Chance Miller, 9to5mac
iOS 18.6 is now available for iPhone users. While the iOS 26 beta has stolen the headlines, Apple has also quietly been testing iOS 18.6 for the last six weeks. Here's what's new.
Update to iOS 18.6 now
You can update your iPhone to iOS 18.6 now by going to the Settings app, choosing General, then choosing Software Update. If you don't see the update right away, keep checking over the next several hours as it might take a while to roll out to all iPhone users. The build number for today's update is 22G86.
As for what's new in iOS 18.6, here are Apple's release notes:
Other than what's mentioned in Apple's official release notes, iOS 18.6 also includes more changes to the App Store experience for users in the European Union. According to Apple's website:
iOS 18.6 and iPadOS 18.6 provide an updated user experience in the EU for installing an alternative app marketplace from a developer's website.
iOS 18.6 and iPadOS 18.6 provide an updated user experience in the EU for installing an app from a developer's website.
Apple will likely publish more details about the security updates included in iOS 18.6 on its its website.
Apple releases tvOS 18.6, HomePod 18.6, more new updates
by Ryan Christoffel, 9to5mac
Apple has just released its latest software updates for users, including watchOS 11.6, tvOS 18.6, visionOS 2.6, iOS 18.6, and more. Here's what to expect.
New software releases focus on security and stability
This fall, Apple will ship major new OS updates like iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe, and more.
But as it often does in the summer, today Apple released another round of updates for its current OS versions.
New releases include:
tvOS 18.6
watchOS 11.6
visionOS 2.6
iOS 18.6
iPadOS 18.6
macOS Sequoia 15.6
HomePod 18.6
Before turning its full attention to iOS 26 and the other big fall updates, Apple is releasing today's software as a way to bring important bug fixes and security improvements to users.
Though most of the time Apple's numbered point releases include some new features and other changes, that's often not the case for the summer updates.
New features are coming in watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and the like. So Apple's goal with today's releases is simply to provide the most stable, secure software possible ahead of this fall's launches.
Should you update even without the promise of new features? Absolutely.
Security fixes alone are a good reason to ensure your devices are always running the latest software.
macOS Sequoia 15.6 now available with an important bug fix
by Marcus Mendes. 9to5mac
After a little more than a month and a few beta and RC versions, Apple has now released macOS Sequoia 15.6 for download. Here's what's new.
macOS 15.6 brings an important Apple Configurator bug fix
While macOS 15.6 doesn't introduce big user-facing features, it does come with the usual security updates and general performance improvements, as well as an important bug fix:
Fixed: Finder and Apple Configurator may be unable to successfully restore some devices from DFU mode. (153476458)
This means that Macs running a previous system version could fail to properly restore devices from DFU mode, resulting in a bricked device and a trip to an Apple Store or support center.
It is possible that this may be the last macOS 15.x update before the official release of macOS Tahoe 26.
Last year, Apple released macOS 14.7 on the same day that macOS 15 was released, so we could still see a beta of macOS 15.7 ahead of a simultaneous release of macOS Tahoe 26 and macOS 15.7.
Alongside the release of macOS 15.6, Apple also released the official versions of:

Apple launches a new customizable wallpaper generator
by Roman Loyola, macworld
The company is marking its new Saudi Arabia online store with a gift for everyone.
Apple recently announced the opening of the Apple Store online and the Apple Store app in Saudi Arabia, which features support for Arabic, a first for Apple. To commemorate the event, Apple released a new wallpaper that features an Arabic-inspired Apple logo.
The wallpaper also features another first: an online customization tool, where you can change the logo and background colors. You can also choose from the preset color combinations and download as many versions as you like. In total, there are five background colors (purple, pink, orange, teal, and blue) and five Apple logo colors (purple, pink, red, green, and blue). The logo is darker than the background, somewhat reminiscent of the iMac design.
To change the wallpaper on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, go to Settings > Wallpaper. On the iPhone and iPad, tap +Add New Wallpaper. On the Mac, click on Add Photo.
The online presence in Saudi Arabia also enables shoppers to customize items with Arabic engraving. The first Saudi Arabia flagship Apple Store retail location is set to open next year in Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Apple often releases new wallpapers to commemorate the opening of new Apple Stores in landmark locations. Earlier this month, a new wallpaper was released for the new Apple Store in Osaka, Japan. Before that, in June, the company released new wallpaper for its Perth City's Forrest Place Apple Store in Australia.
M4 MacBook Air's biggest success may still be ahead of it
by Ryan Christoffel, 9to5mac
Earlier this year, Apple launched the M4 MacBook Air and I came away very impressed. Heading into Apple's packed fall launch lineup, you might expect the product to fade into the background of the new and shiny. Here are several reasons, though, why I believe the M4 MacBook Air has its biggest days still ahead.
M4 MacBook Air will remain Apple's newest Mac this fall, and get all the marketing attention
Out of all of Apple's early 2025 product launches, the M4 MacBook Air looks set for an especially strong rest of the year.
The iPhone 16e, M3 iPad Air, and A16 iPad have all had their moment. But they'll be overshadowed this fall by the more exciting, impressive flagship iPhone 17 lineup and the M5 iPad Pro.
In an unusual move for Apple, the company isn't expected to launch any new Macs this fall.
The M5 MacBook Pro was originally rumored, but Mark Gurman says it's been delayed into early 2026. And the expected Mac Pro update is MIA.
That means the M4 MacBook Air should benefit from all of Apple's marketing focus in the all-important fall and holiday season.
With no new Mac on the horizon, the M4 MacBook Air will also get a boost from the increased user awareness that macOS Tahoe brings.
Apple only ships a major new macOS software version once per year. And this year, that update includes a Liquid Glass design overhaul.
Liquid Glass isn't the only change that might entice first-time Mac buyers though.
Apple has put extra effort into making its software platforms work better together than ever.
For example, macOS Tahoe includes a handful of changes that make the Mac easier to use for anyone familiar with an iPhone or iPad.
So the OS isn't just getting a fresh look, it's also becoming more approachable for those new to Mac.
Price point and base model features make strong case for M4 MacBook Air
Finally, the M4 MacBook Air is set to capitalize on all these different factors because it's simply a uniquely compelling value.
That $999 starting price is important, no doubt.
But deals can make it even lower (Amazon now has it for just $799).
And unlike last year, when you had M3 and M2 options to choose from, these days the choice is easy: M4 is the only one Apple sells.
And unlike previous models that almost demanded RAM upgrades, the base model M4 MacBook
Air has:
16GB of RAM, plus…
the latest-gen M4 chip
a much better 12MP Center Stage camera
it can drive two external displays
and more...
For anyone considering updating an old Mac, or buying one for the first time, the M4 MacBook Air is a compelling option.
Normally in the fall, Apple would have brand new Macs ready to steal away consumers' attention.
This year, the M4 MacBook Air stands to benefit, and it's hard not to see it succeeding.
M4 MacBook Air is currently available for only $799 on Amazon, down from $999.
iOS 26 adds a brand new iPhone ringtone, listen here
by Ryan Christoffel, 9to5mac
The iPhone's default ringtone has become an iconic sound, but in iOS 26 Apple has a brand new ringtone option available as an alternative for users. Here's what is sounds like.
New iOS 26 ringtone available as alternative to default
Yesterday Apple released the first iOS 26 public beta, bringing the latest version of the forthcoming iPhone software update to many more users.
iOS 26, the next major iPhone update, not only brings a Liquid Glass redesign, but also new features for popular apps like Apple Maps. The app got some big changes last year, but there's more coming soon. Here are the new Apple Maps features arriving in iOS 26.
Apple Maps in iOS 26 has Liquid Glass and new intelligence about your daily activity
Apple Maps benefits from iOS 26's new systemwide Liquid Glass design. This means buttons and other UI elements have been updated with a fresh look.
You'll notice the new design most when viewing place listings, browsing your guides, and in other small touches.
Liquid Glass aside, Apple's bigger focus in Maps this year is on two new features:
Preferred Routes
Visited Places
Preferred Routes
Maps can now learn from your everyday activity which routes you tend to take—for example, as part of your work commute or other regular routines.
By understanding your preferred routes, Maps in iOS 26 can proactively alert you about potential delays you might encounter
These notifications should help ensure you don't end up unexpectedly delayed on your commute to work or another important meeting.
You'll also be able to see key information about the route in Maps' 'Suggestions' widget, so you can get a preview of what to expect right from your iPhone's Home Screen.
Visited Places
Separately but somewhat related, Visited Places is Maps' new feature that stores a record of places you've been. Maps can automatically detect a restaurant or shop you visit, and will save it—with no action required on your part—inside the app for future reference.
You can find your full history of saved places inside the new 'Visits' menu in your Library.
Both of these new features, admittedly, could prompt privacy concerns.
Apple says the preferred routes feature is powered entirely by "on-device intelligence," so your commute habits stay on your iPhone. Similarly, Visited Places are "protected with end-to-end encryption, cannot be accessed by Apple, and can be easily removed with just a swipe."
iOS 26 is currently in beta testing, and will be available for all users this fall.
AirPods Pro 2 get better every year, and iOS 26 extends that streak
by Ryan Christoffel, 9to5mac
Amid ongoing uncertainty around when AirPods Pro 3 might finally arrive, one thing is very clear: AirPods Pro 2 just keep getting better. Here's how the trend of AirPods Pro 2 improvements will continue in iOS 26.
New iOS 26 features coming to AirPods Pro 2
I'm as eager as anyone else for Apple to debut AirPods Pro 3. But if I'm honest, they'll have a hard time living up to the value I've gotten out of their predecessor.
I bought AirPods Pro 2 back in 2022 when they first launched. At the time, upgraded active noise cancellation (ANC) was the biggest draw for me.
But some of my overall favorite AirPods Pro 2 features have arrived post-launch.
Every year, Apple has given AirPods Pro 2 users a handful of new features via firmware updates.
iOS 17 brought Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Volume, and more
iOS 18 added Voice Isolation, Siri Interactions, Hearing Protection, Hearing Aid, and more
In iOS 26, AirPods Pro 2 will gain six new features:
Pattern of new AirPods features via firmware shows no signs of slowing
We're all used to getting new iPhone features via software updates. The same goes for the Mac, iPad, and Apple's other platforms.
But this pattern of adding so many new features to AirPods still surprises me to this day.
Apple no doubt could have sold more AirPods by revving the hardware slightly each year and making new features exclusive to the latest model. We could be on AirPods Pro 5 or 6 by this time if that had happened.
Instead, Apple has set a new precedent and standard for AirPods firmware upgrades.
When AirPods Pro 3 finally do arrive, they'll no doubt only include a fraction of the new features that will eventually be added via updates.
The new H3 chip could easily prove the most important feature over time, just like AirPods Pro 2's H2 has been.
But for now, Apple is preparing to ship yet another new wave of AirPods Pro 2 features. And when it does, the three-year-old wireless earbuds will again prove one of Apple's best value products.
iPhone 17 Pro: Seven new features are coming next month
by Ryan Christoffel, 9to5mac
It's going to be a big fall for Apple, with 15+ new products expected—including the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air. But what about Apple's flagship Pro models? Here are seven new features coming to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.
A19 Pro chip
A19 Pro chip
Apple will once again upgrade its new iPhones with a new and improved A-series chip. This year that will be the A19 Pro chip.
Apple's very best silicon will be reserved exclusively for the 17 Pro and Pro Max, though the new 17 Air model is rumored to come with a modified variant. The standard A19 chip will be included in the base iPhone 17.
24MP front-facing camera and 48MP telephoto
iPhone front selfie camera
The iPhone's cameras get better every year, but often Apple's big improvements focus solely on rear cameras.
With the full iPhone 17 line, though, Apple plans to upgrade the front camera from a 12MP sensor to a brand new 24MP sensor, which should bring big improvements.
As for the rear cameras, the telephoto lens will get bumped to 48MP—making all three rear cameras 48MP.
12GB RAM, the most ever in an iPhone
The advent of AI has made RAM in Apple's devices increasingly important. iPhone 15 owners know this better than anyone, since RAM limitations made the device incompatible with Apple Intelligence.
Apple plans to give its 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max models 12GB of RAM—the most ever in an iPhone.
This is a nice 50% improvement from the 16 Pro's 8GB of RAM and should ensure faster performance with Apple Intelligence and other demanding tasks.
Anti-reflective, more scratch-resistant display
Even though the iPhone 17 Air and base model are likely to gain certain display features that were formerly Pro-exclusive, Apple has some new upgrades coming to its Pro line to make up for that.
iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are rumored to feature a new anti-reflective, more scratch-resistant display.
Think something along the lines of nano-texture's benefits, but without the drawbacks of being so delicate that it needs a special polishing cloth.
Largest battery ever in iPhone 17 Pro Max
Lots of Pro Max users love the bulk and size of the huge iPhone.
This year, iPhone 17 Pro Max is getting thicker than ever to pack an even larger battery.
Rumors indicate the iPhone 17 Pro battery will stay about the same as last year's. But if you want the most possible battery life in an iPhone, the Pro Max is becoming a better option than ever.
New design with aluminum, camera bar, and bolder colors
Like Apple did with its 16 Pro models, the company is ready to double down on its Pro line being especially optimized for camera use. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will reportedly replace the traditional camera bump with a camera 'bar' instead.
Both models are also getting a redesigned frame, with aluminum replacing titanium. Apple just recently introduced titanium to the iPhone's Pro models in 2023, so the shift to aluminum is especially curious.
One apparent benefit of adopting aluminum will be bolder Pro colors this year, with Orange and Dark Blue rumored to join the standard Black and Silver options.
Finally, the full iPhone 17 lineup is expected to get improved cooling systems, with the iPhone 17 Pro Max exclusively boasting a vapor chamber plus graphite sheet.
No doubt this move is a reflection of Apple Intelligence's importance to the iPhone's future. AI not only requires more powerful chips and extra RAM, but better cooling to maintain max performance too.
iPhone 17 Pro features: wrap-up
This list of iPhone 17 Pro features reiterates my belief that this year's purchase decision will be harder than ever. The ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air sounds very exciting. But depending on your priorities, there's no doubt that iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will continue offering the best overall package.
Apple's launching two new Home products this fall, here's what's coming
by Ryan Chritoffel, 9to5mac
Apple has a packed lineup of hardware launches this fall, with 15+ new products expected. Out of those debuts, two will be brand new Home products: a new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini 2. Here's what to expect.
#1: New Apple TV 4K
It's been nearly three years since new Apple TV hardware shipped, but the wait's ending soon.
A brand new Apple TV 4K is coming this fall with several upgrades rumored.
The current model's A15 Bionic is expected to be replaced by an A18 or A17 Pro chip.
No doubt a big reason to change the chip is enabling Apple Intelligence, which requires more power than the current Apple TV chip can offer.
Apple hasn't announced any specific Apple Intelligence features coming to tvOS 26, but the company might do so as part of the announcement of the new Apple TV 4K model.
A built-in camera is another rumored feature for the new Apple TV 4K, and hints in tvOS 26 seem to support that idea. FaceTime and other video calls would be significantly more convenient if they no longer required sacrificing your iPhone.
Apple's first in-house Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip is also coming to the new Apple TV. That may not sound the most exciting, except neither did Apple's 5G modem until the C1 was unveiled packing some key benefits.
Mark Gurman says: "With a homegrown wireless chip in Apple's smart home devices, the products will work more closely together and potentially synchronize data more quickly."
#2: HomePod mini 2
HomePod mini first arrived almost five years ago, in November 2020. Rumors indicate we'll finally get the first hardware revision this fall.
Not a lot is known about HomePod mini 2 at this point.
Mark Gurman says Apple's new in-house Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip will come to HomePod mini 2, potentially enabling better cross-device connectivity.
It's likely Apple will have a fresh lineup of colors for HomePod mini 2. The device will no doubt also support a more current Wi-Fi standard like Wi-Fi 6E or 7.
One big question mark is Apple Intelligence support to power future Siri upgrades.
The current HomePod mini uses an Apple Watch-class S5 SiP. And we now know from watchOS 26 that certain Apple Intelligence features can be supported by an S9 and later.
If Apple puts another S-class chip in HomePod mini 2, it will almost certainly be an S9 or S10.
New Home products: wrap-up
This was originally expected to be a big year for Apple's smart home strategy, but delays to the 'HomePad' product (which may actually be called HomePod Touch) upended those plans.
If Apple can ship strong updates to the Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini this fall, though, followed by the new HomePod Touch in the spring, we could be well on our way to a stronger Apple Home ecosystem than ever before.
New Apple TV+ movies coming this fall look like strongest lineup yet
by Ryan Christoffel, 9to5mac
Apple TV+ is best known for its original TV series, but the streamer has recently started finding success in movies too. And coming soon are three high-profile new movies that look set to give Apple TV+ its best fall lineup to date.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 sounds like it will be very much worth the wait
by Ryan Christoffel, 9to5mac
Last year, Apple was rumored to launch a new Apple Watch Ultra—but it didn't. Instead, we only got a black finish for the existing Ultra 2. Now, with an Apple Watch Ultra 3 upgrade truly around the corner, it's increasingly sounding like it will be very much worth the wait.
Two-year wait for Apple Watch Ultra 3 will result in bigger upgrades
As far as Apple products go, Apple Watch Ultra is a relative newcomer. The first model launched in 2022, with a second-gen landing a year later in 2023.
Expectations were that we would continue getting annual Ultra updates, just like we do with the standard Apple Watch 'Series' models.
But last year, Apple opted to skip a new Ultra.
When Apple Watch Ultra 3 finally arrives—likely next month—it will come with higher expectations due to the longer update cycle.
Based on the latest rumors though, Apple seems set to deliver a big upgrade.
Features are expected to include:
Larger display
S11 SiP
Satellite connectivity for messaging
High blood pressure detection
5G cellular
Always-on refreshes every second due to LTPO3
Wide-angle OLED
The last two on the list are playing catch-up to Apple Watch Series 10. But for the most part, the Ultra 3's upgrades will be brand new for Apple Watch models.
And this is just what we know about so far.
It's very possible Apple could give the Ultra 3 even better battery life than its predecessors. If the new, larger display comes with a bigger case size, that extra space could provide more battery.
Additional battery life is already coming to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, so it wouldn't surprise me to see Apple's other best-in-class battery device extend its lead.
Apple Watch Ultra's latest upgrade should easily top its last
Looking at the Apple Watch Ultra 3 features above, even with no additional surprises, these upgrades clearly top the changes Apple made with its second-gen model.
Advantages of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 over its predecessor were minimal: a slightly better SiP, brighter display, and a couple software additions. The 1-year upgrade timeline resulted in more of a spec bump update.
This year, Apple Watch Ultra 3 seems poised to easily offer the most compelling upgrade yet.
Scammers are sending fake DocuSign emails that appear to show charges from major companies, including Apple, in an attempt to catch users off guard.
Just about everybody on the AppleInsider staff is receiving messages that look like billing receipts for recent Apple Pay purchases. The email claims a subscription has been charged to your account and includes a phone number to call if it wasn't you.
Don't call it. Don't click on anything.
That number doesn't go to Apple. It connects you to scammers posing as support agents.
Here are some tips if you do respond to a scam email. Call your bank. Put a stop payment on your charge card if it is involved. Change your account password for whatever accounts are involved. If it's a PayPal account, log into that account and change the password. If you use a bank account online change that password. You can also set up email "rules" to block email from the sender if their email address shows. If you use Apples Mail app you'll find the "Rules" options in the Mail app Settings. You should also change the password to your email account that the scam email came to.

Last month's MAGIC zoom meeting presentation was all about Apple products. If you're thinking about buying a new computer, or iPhone, iPad, AirPods, etc. you can watch the zoom meeting video on the MAGIC website.
If you're undecided about buying a new Mac computer then here are a few thoughts that might help. First, if your Mac is between 7 and 10 years old then it's time. You Mac computer will still work okay for most things, but what you'll notice is that it will no longer update to the newer operating systems. That's not a deal breaker in itself, but the important thing that we usually mention is that there are the security enhancements with each upgrade. One item in particular, when the operating system is upgraded the Safari browser gets updated.
When your operating system gets a few years behind you may notice that web pages might not display properly. Often website security on the servers is improved and the computer browsers have to be able to handle new security certificate demands.
Other reasons you might be thinking of a new Mac is that your old one seems to have become slow to respond or you may be running out of storage space. Or you may just want some of the new features that your old device lacks. For instance, Apple Photos app image adjustment options now include a "Clean Up" feature, but it is only available with Apples' "M" computer chips. (My computer lacks that function because I'm still using a 2018 Mac with an Intel chip, but I plan on a new Mac this fall or winter.)
Similarly with iPhones and iPads, storage space, new features, and battery life may be reasons to replace your old device.
What to do with your old device is also a consideration. You can always use an old Mac for a dedicated purpose such as just for games or photos. You can use it "off-line" for maximum security. Or hand it off to someone who has no computer. If you purchase from Apple, they will take old device trade-ins in some cases. Then there is also the electronics recycling at local recycle centers. Just make sure to log out of your Apple account and erase the storage drive before handing off an old computer. If you plan to trade it in to Apple, they will provide instruction on preparing the old Mac.
If you need to compare products, Apples' website is a good place to start. You'll find all the current information about products and they offer product comparisons. You can also click on the "Buy" button and see and choose different options and it'll show the cost as you go, without committing to buy. One main specification to check is the storage space to make sure all your current data will fit onto the new Mac with room to spare.
