Ann's Tricks

Every Mac enthusiast we know has a wealth of tricks up their sleeves. These were gotten by Ann Wright from insider@macstoresnw.com

Scrolling Long Menus

Tired of scrolling through really long menus? Click once to open a menu (remember, you don't need to click and hold; a single click will do), then type the first few letters of the menu item you wish to access. This is especially useful in web browsers, where popout menus are often quite long.

iChat Audio Video

In iChat AV, a phone or camera icon alongside a buddy's name means that person is available for audio or video / audio chat. During a conversation, if the audio begins to get muddy, quickly mute and unmute using the button in the chat window - this clears it up sometimes.

Software Installers

Software installers can cause changes in file permissions, and sometimes an installer can be adversely affected due to incorrect permissions. Accordingly, use Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder) to verify or repair permissions to troubleshoot an installer that's not working correctly, and also if you experience problems immediately after installing new software. Also see Repair Permissions (OSX) on this site.

Quickly Erase CD-RW

To quickly erase a bunch of CD-RW disks, open the terminal in the Applications --> Utilities folder, and type this command: drutil bulkerase quick, then press enter. You will be prompted to insert disks for erasure. When you're finished, press the control key and tap "c", or just close the terminal window.
