Maxwelton Valley Gardens is a focused retail nursery / landscape design firm specializing in plants for difficult gardening conditions, such as dry shade, wet soils, seaside conditions, slopes and banks, etc. Located on Whidbey Island, about 35 miles north of Seattle, five minutes from the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry.
We offer many unusual perennials, shrubs, groundcovers, fragrant rhododendrons and iris. One specialty is Northwest native plants -- we stock around 100 different species, and we are available for consultations regarding restoring native habitats. Our everyday prices are generally lower than "end-of-season" prices elsewhere -- so it is worth the extra effort to find us even though we are not located on the highway. (We are not set up for mail-order, but can occasionally accommodate you if the plant is small and shipping costs are reasonable. We do not have a catalogue of plants with prices.)
Landscape consultations can be arranged at your property. (Non-Whidbey Island consultations will include travel time and costs, but we'd be glad to come to Hawaii to look over your garden). Bill Halstead is a regionally recognized expert on plants suited for our area, and he will come to your property and advise you on suitable plants depending on your light conditions, soil conditions, exposure to the elements, water availability and your desired effect. His hourly fee is much less than your would expect. Extensive written notes are included. Detailed drawn plans can also be requested. Landscape customers can receive a discount on plants purchased through our nursery for a year following the consultation -- a big savings right there. Maximize your landscape investment by planting the proper plants -- ones that will thrive in your particular garden conditions and fit in with your goals.
