UUCWI Usher Job Description (January 2009)
Prepare the sanctuary for the service, then greet and hand out Orders of Service.
Below is a list of specific tasks or items to make ready:
• Arrive at the church by 9:30.
• Arrange chairs as requested by the worship leader.
• Hymnals — in boxes or on shelves in storage room – distribute on chairs
(there are not enough for every chair – at least a couple in each row)
Leave a few hymnals for late-comers on a chair just inside the sanctuary doors.
• Focusing bell – be sure the little bell is on the podium in case needed.
• Chalice and matches (be sure there’s a small pool of oil in the chalice – only about
a quarter of an inch deep is fine – there’s a bottle of it in the storage closet). Please
don’t spill the oil! It’s a mess to clean up. Light a tea light from which the leader
can light the chalice.
• Have candles and bowl of sand ready for “joys and concerns”
• Set up the sound system (microphone and speakers). Ken, Baird, Tom, Earl,
Frank, or Dave can help
• Provide a glass of water on the lectern for the speaker.
• Offering baskets – have ready on altar table. Identify 2 people to pass the baskets
during the offertory. When the music starts, come forward to get the baskets and
pass from front to back. Stand with the baskets at the back of the sanctuary until
the offertory music is finished. Then come forward and place the collection on the
altar to be acknowledged by the worship leader.
• Once the sanctuary is in order and if you still have time, assist the Membership
representative in preparing the Membership materials outside the sanctuary.
• Put on a “greeter” tag and assist the Membership representative in greeting folks
as they arrive and handing out orders of service.
• At 10:00 p.m., or when the Worship Leader is ready to begin the service, ask
anyone still in the hallway outside the sanctuary to enter. Close the kitchen and
sanctuary doors.
• If appropriate, stack some chairs away from the refreshment area to leave enough
room for people to “mix”.
• After or during the social hour (your choice), put away the hymnals.
Thank you!!
