Call for Actors
AUDITIONS for a cast of 4 men and 4 women, ages 20 and older.
WCT’s production of The See-Saw Tree, written by David Wood and directed by Chris Fisher, will have auditions on Tues, Jan. 13, 2008 at the Whidbey Children’s Theater, Langley from 5:15 PM to 7:45 PM.
The See-Saw Tree is a play for younger audiences that shows two worlds: the human world where “improvements” can mean paving over natural environments, and the animal world that depends on soil, plants and trees. The play begins with a contentious city council meeting where developers and environmentalists are arguing over what to do about a vacant plot of land with an ancient oak tree. With the human stalemate, the play shifts into the world of the tree—the See-Saw Tree—and the animals dwelling in and around it, whose lives are shattered by the news that the tree is about to be felled. Each actor plays two roles: the human and animal. The playing out of the consequences to the animals of removing the tree allows the human characters to find common ground.
The See-Saw Tree was commissioned by the British Environmental group “Common Ground” to show that “our cultural relationship with trees and woods” is as important as our ecological need for them. The play is both entertaining and thought-provoking. It ends with the audience voting whether the tree should be saved or not. A review in Stage and TV Today said “The rapt silence of the audience was evidence of the impact the play made…provides an invaluable guideline to the young about the importance of the environment.”
