Save As... in OS-X 10.8 Mountain Lion and later

A one time use can be done by holding down the Option key when you select the File menu. This will turn the Duplicate option into a Save As... option.

A more useful fix puts the Save As... option in the File menu permanently. Here is the procedure:

  1. Open System Preferences from the Apple menu and select Keyboards
  2. Click the Keyboard Shortcuts tab and choose Application Shortcuts from the list on the left
  3. Press the [+] plus button to add a new shortcut, and for Menu Title type Save As... exactly, with the periods
  4. Click to "Keyboard Shortcut" and hit the familiar Command+Shift+S, then click "Add"
Open any document in any Apple application such as TextEdit or Preview and hit Command+Shift+S to see the familiar Save As window works.

With this keystroke enabled, you'll find Duplicate has been moved down in the File menu to make way for Save As... which is now always available. Keyboard setting for Save As... in Mountain Lion
